CENTCOM confirms both F-15E crewmembers rescued from deep inside Iran after 36-hour evasion — operation involved 150+ aircraft and Israeli special forces
CENTCOM confirmed the successful rescue of both crewmembers from the F-15E Strike Eagle shot down over Iran on April 2. The weapons system officer (WSO), who evaded capture for approximately 36 hours, was secured by US special operations forces in a complex mission involving over 150 aircraft, CIA deception operations, and assistance from Israeli Shaldag and Sayeret Matkal units. US forces established a makeshift airstrip very close to a major Iranian city, extracted all personnel, and destroyed two transport aircraft and MH-6 Little Bird helicopters that could not be evacuated. A US helicopter took fire during the operation and an A-10 Warthog crashed after the pilot determined the aircraft was no longer flyable. The MC-130 extraction aircraft became stuck in sand with their nose gear but managed to take off. Trump called it 'one of the most complex search-and-rescue missions ever' and announced the second raid kept US forces over Iran for seven hours. The WSO is seriously wounded and receiving medical treatment in Kuwait.
