UK deploys Sky Sabre air defense to Saudi Arabia, extends Typhoon jets in Qatar — Healey Gulf visit

·Saudi Arabia / Qatar / Gulf

UK Defence Secretary John Healey, on a Gulf visit, announced Britain will deploy the Sky Sabre short-range air defence missile system in Saudi Arabia and extend the operations of RAF Typhoon jets in Qatar to help allies defend against Iranian attacks. Extra UK troops are being sent to the Middle East.

UK Defence Secretary John Healey announced on March 31, during a visit to Gulf nations, that the UK will deploy its Sky Sabre ground-based air defence system in Saudi Arabia and extend the operations of RAF Typhoon fast jets in Qatar, PA News Agency reported. Additional UK troops are being sent to the region. Sky Sabre is the UK's next-generation short-range air defence (SHORAD) system, capable of engaging cruise missiles, aircraft and drones at ranges up to 25 km. It replaces the Rapier system and has been used in Ukraine. Deploying Sky Sabre in Saudi Arabia directly addresses the threat pattern from Iran's missile and drone salvos targeting Riyadh and the eastern provinces — 8 ballistic missiles toward Riyadh and 10 drones intercepted on D32. Extending Typhoon operations from Qatar adds allied fast-jet capacity to the Gulf air defense and potential strike mission envelope. The UK becomes the first European NATO member to make a positive military commitment to the Iran war theater (as opposed to Spain, Italy and France restricting US base access), though Healey's framing is defensive — 'to help allies defend their skies from Iranian attacks.'
