Turkey: NATO defenses intercept Iranian ballistic missile over Turkish airspace — fourth such incident

·Eastern Turkey / Turkish airspace

A ballistic missile launched from Iran entered Turkish airspace before being shot down by NATO air and missile defenses in the eastern Mediterranean region. Turkey's Defense Ministry confirmed it was the fourth such incident since the war began. Iran has denied authorizing any of the three prior launches and asked Turkey for a joint investigation.

Turkey's Defense Ministry announced on March 30 that NATO air and missile defenses had intercepted a ballistic missile launched from Iran that had entered Turkish airspace — the fourth such incident since the start of the US-Israeli war. Turkey's ministry said all necessary measures were being taken 'decisively and without hesitation.' NATO subsequently issued an official alliance-level confirmation. Spokeswoman Allison Hart stated: 'On Monday 30 March, NATO again successfully intercepted an Iranian ballistic missile heading to Turkey. NATO is prepared for such threats and will always do what is necessary to defend all allies.' The previous three interceptions had prompted Ankara to formally protest and warn Tehran. In each prior case, Iran denied authorizing the launches and requested a joint investigation with Turkey. The pattern of missiles repeatedly violating Turkish/NATO airspace — four times in 31 days — represents a serious and sustained stress on Turkey's NATO membership and Ankara's relationship with both Tehran and the Western alliance. No Article 5 collective defense invocation has been made; Ankara has absorbed all four incidents via protest rather than escalation.
