UN rights chief Turk condemns Minab school bombing: 'visceral horror,' demands justice

·Geneva, Switzerland

UN Human Rights Council High Commissioner Volker Turk condemned the February 28 bombing of the Shajareh Tayyebeh Elementary School in Minab as evoking 'visceral horror.' Turk called on Washington to conclude its investigation promptly and make findings public: 'There must be justice for the terrible harm done.' Senior US officials previously said the strike — which killed students — is under investigation.

UN Human Rights Council High Commissioner Volker Turk addressed the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on 27 March 2026 regarding the February 28 bombing of the Shajareh Tayyebeh Elementary School in Minab, Iran. 'The bombing of the Shajareh Tayyebeh Elementary School in Minab evoked a visceral horror,' Turk stated. He stressed that 'the onus is on those who carried out the attack to investigate it promptly, impartially, transparently and thoroughly.' Turk added: 'Senior US officials have said the strike is under investigation. I call for that process to be concluded as soon as possible, and for its findings to be made public. There must be justice for the terrible harm done.' The Minab school strike on Day 1 of the conflict killed elementary school students and has remained a major point of international condemnation. The US has acknowledged the strike occurred but has not publicly assigned responsibility.
