Pentagon weighing 10,000 more US ground troops to Middle East — to expand Trump's military options
The Pentagon is considering deploying up to 10,000 additional ground troops to the Middle East to expand Trump's military options even as he weighs peace talks with Tehran, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing Defense Department officials. The deployment would come on top of existing US forces in the region including those positioned for a potential Kharg Island operation.
Actor responses
WSJ (DoD officials): Pentagon weighing deployment of up to 10,000 additional US ground troops to Middle East to give Trump more military options even as peace talks with Iran continue. Would add to forces already pre-positioned toward the Gulf.
Iran has not responded to WSJ reporting on additional US troop deployments. Iran is simultaneously engaged in back-channel diplomacy via Pakistan and filing counter-responses to the US 15-point plan while continuing missile attacks on Israel.
Israel has not commented on the WSJ reporting. Israeli strikes on Kharg Island fortifications and Iranian infrastructure have been preparing the operational environment for potential US ground action.
