IDF strikes Iran's Underwater Research Centre in Isfahan — Iran's only submarine design facility

The Israel Defense Forces announced it struck the Iranian Underwater Research Centre in Isfahan on March 25, guided by Israeli navy intelligence. The IDF statement said: 'As part of the strikes, the IDF, guided by Israeli navy intelligence, targeted the Iranian terror regime's Underwater Research Centre in Isfahan. The centre is the only facility in Iran responsible for the design and development of submarines and support systems for the Iranian navy. The site also produced various types of unmanned vessels.' The Underwater Research Centre is Iran's crown jewel of naval asymmetric warfare development. Iran has pursued a submarine capability as a strategic deterrent and anti-carrier weapon for decades; the centre housed submarine design, development, and support systems. The mention of 'unmanned vessels' is operationally critical — the same unmanned naval drones that participated in the 101-missile attack on the USS Abraham Lincoln were developed at this facility. The Israeli navy intelligence guidance signals the strike was planned specifically in response to the carrier attack. Isfahan is Iran's third-largest city and one of the most significant military-industrial hubs: it hosts the Isfahan Nuclear Technology Centre, Shahid Kharrazi Industries (missile production), and now confirmed to have hosted the Underwater Research Centre. Destroying Iran's only submarine design facility is one of the most consequential single-target strikes of the conflict, eliminating decades of naval R&D investment.
