UK Foreign Office summons Iranian ambassador over hostile surveillance of London's Jewish community

Iran's ambassador to the United Kingdom, Seyed Ali Mousavi, was called into the Foreign Office on Monday as part of an escalating diplomatic confrontation over Iranian covert operations on British soil. The summons followed the recent charging of an Iranian national and a British-Iranian dual national who were accused of carrying out hostile surveillance on London's Jewish community. A Foreign Office spokesman said the UK takes the threat posed by Iran and its proxies 'extremely seriously.' The summons was issued on the instruction of Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and the Iranian diplomat was received by Middle East minister Hamish Falconer. The UK said the Iranian actions were 'reckless and destabilising' both in Britain and overseas. The move adds to a broader pattern of UK-Iran tensions during the war period, alongside the UK's expansion of military rules of engagement to allow strikes on Iranian Hormuz launchers threatening commercial shipping, and the Cobra emergency committee convened earlier Monday to address the economic fallout from the conflict.
