US dispatches thousands more Marines, sailors and 3 warships to Mideast amid Kharg deliberations
The United States military is deploying thousands of additional Marines and sailors to the Middle East, along with three more warships, three US officials told Reuters on Friday. The deployment comes as Trump's administration deliberates occupying or blockading Iran's Kharg Island to force Hormuz reopening, and as the White House confirmed the US 'can take out Kharg Island at any time.' The buildup is separate from the USS Boxer MEU departure announced earlier in the day.
Actor responses
Three US officials confirmed to Reuters: thousands of additional Marines and sailors deploying to Mideast plus three more warships. White House: 'The United States Military can take out Kharg Island at any time if the President gives the order.'
Iran has not yet publicly responded to the troop buildup announcement. IRGC and Iranian armed forces have continued missile salvos against Israel. Any US Marines operation on Kharg Island would face Iranian drone and rocket fire in a confined space.
IRGC has previously threatened to target US carriers and military assets in the Gulf. An occupation of Kharg Island would put US forces in direct IRGC rocket and drone range with limited maneuver space.
