Trump signals Iran war wind-down on Truth Social, lists 5 military objectives 'nearly met'

·Washington DC, United States

US President Trump posted on Truth Social that the US is 'getting very close to meeting our objectives as we consider winding down our great military efforts' against Iran. He listed 5 objectives: (1) degrade Iranian missile capability; (2) destroy Iran's defense industrial base; (3) eliminate Iran's navy and air force; (4) prevent nuclear capability; (5) protect Middle Eastern allies. On Hormuz: 'it will have to be guarded and policed by other nations who use it — the United States does not.'

US President Trump posted on Truth Social on Day 21 (Friday, March 20), signaling the US-Israel war on Iran may be entering a wind-down phase: 'We are getting very close to meeting our objectives as we consider winding down our great military efforts in the Middle East with respect to the terrorist regime of Iran.' Trump then listed five military objectives: '(1) Completely degrading Iranian missile capability, launchers and everything else pertaining to them. (2) Destroying Iran's defense industrial base. (3) Eliminating their navy and air force, including anti-aircraft weaponry. (4) Never allowing Iran to get even close to nuclear capability, and always being in a position where the USA can quickly and powerfully react to such a situation, should it take place. (5) Protecting, at the highest level, our Middle Eastern allies, including Israel, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, and others.' On the Strait of Hormuz, Trump wrote: 'The Strait of Hormuz will have to be guarded and policed, as necessary, by other nations who use it. The United States does not! If asked, we will help these countries in their Hormuz efforts, but it shouldn't be necessary once Iran's threat is eradicated. Importantly, it will be an easy military operation for them.' SIGNIFICANCE: This is the clearest signal yet of a potential US war exit strategy. Several objectives in Trump's list (objectives 2, 3, 5 — destroying defense industrial base, eliminating air force and anti-aircraft weapons, protecting regional allies) had NOT been listed as official US war objectives prior to this post. The Hormuz language is also notable: Trump is explicitly disclaiming US responsibility for policing the strait post-war, pointing at regional powers (South Korea, Japan, China, Gulf states). The wind-down framing came hours after Trump ruled out a ceasefire ('we want victory'), suggesting the distinction is: no negotiated ceasefire, but a unilateral US military draw-down after objectives are 'met.'

USSUPPORTINGPOLITICAL

Trump Truth Social: 'We are getting very close to meeting our objectives as we consider winding down our great military efforts.' Lists 5 objectives. On Hormuz: 'It will have to be guarded by other nations who use it — the United States does not.'

IsraelSUPPORTINGPOLITICAL

Israel is listed among the allies Trump says the US is protecting (objective 5). Earlier in the day Trump said Israel will agree to end the war when the US decides ('I think so, yeah'). No Israeli public response to the wind-down signal.

IranOPPOSINGPOLITICAL

Iran has not responded to the wind-down signal. Continued to launch missile salvos at Israel throughout Day 21. The wind-down framing coincides with IDF assessment that Iran's western launch capability is 'degraded' — consistent with Trump's claim of being close to objective (1).

NATONEUTRALPOLITICAL

NATO countries have balked at Trump's Hormuz calls. Trump's post hands Hormuz responsibility to 'other nations who use it' — shifting burden from NATO to Asia-Pacific (South Korea, Japan, China) and Gulf states. NATO allies 'willing to help secure Hormuz but not in the middle of the war, which they didn't start.'
