IMO convenes extraordinary session on Hormuz shipping crisis — 3,200 vessels and 20,000 seafarers trapped west of strait
The International Maritime Organization convened its 36th Extraordinary Council Session (C/ES.36) on March 18-19 in London to address the maritime crisis caused by the Iran war. The IMO disclosed that approximately 3,200 vessels carrying around 20,000 seafarers are currently trapped west of the Strait of Hormuz. The session aims to establish a safe maritime corridor for the evacuation of stranded ships and crew from the Persian Gulf.
Actor responses
Iran has not engaged with the IMO extraordinary session. Tehran threatened to close Hormuz and Ghalibaf stated the strait will not return to pre-war status — directly opposing the IMO evacuation corridor proposal.
US supports IMO efforts to establish a safe maritime corridor. CENTCOM strikes on Iranian anti-ship sites near Hormuz are framed as enabling freedom of navigation — consistent with the IMO evacuation corridor objective.
