Qatar evacuates Education City and Msheireb district — missile intercept over Doha, six US university campuses cleared

·Doha, Qatar

Qatari authorities evacuated parts of Doha's Education City campus — home to branch campuses of six US universities including Georgetown, Texas A&M, Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, and Northwestern — and the Msheireb district, which houses government offices and a Google office, following mobile phone emergency alerts warning of incoming missiles or drones. Qatar's interior ministry confirmed a 'precautionary' evacuation. Missile interceptions were reported over Qatar approximately one hour after the evacuation orders. The Qatari armed forces confirmed successfully intercepting an incoming missile.

Qatari authorities ordered the evacuation of multiple areas of Doha on Friday, March 13, following mass mobile phone emergency alerts warning of incoming missiles or drones. The affected areas included Education City — a sprawling campus hosting branch campuses of six major US universities: Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, Texas A&M University, Carnegie Mellon University, Cornell University's Weill Medical College, Northwestern University, and HEC Paris — as well as Msheireb Downtown Doha, which houses Qatari government ministry offices and a Google regional office. Qatar's Interior Ministry confirmed the evacuations were a 'temporary precautionary measure' without specifying the areas in its initial statement. AFP witnesses on the ground reported seeing people leaving Education City and the Msheireb district. Approximately one hour after the evacuation orders were issued, Qatari armed forces confirmed successfully intercepting an incoming missile. Qatar's Interior Minister had previously stated the security situation was 'stable' even as the interceptions confirmed ongoing Iranian targeting of Qatari territory. The evacuation of Education City is particularly significant: the campus hosts thousands of US and international students and faculty at institutions that are central to American soft power in the Gulf. A successful strike on any of these campuses would constitute a direct attack on US-affiliated civilian institutions in a third country — a significant escalation threshold. Qatar hosts Al Udeid Air Base, the largest US military installation in the Middle East, which Iran has previously struck and continues to target.

Actor responses

IranNEUTRALRESPONSE

Iran's operations target military assets and those who support aggression against Iran. Qatar hosts the largest US military base in the Middle East. The consequences of hosting forces attacking Iran are unavoidable.

United StatesOPPOSINGRESPONSE

Iran's targeting of civilian areas in Qatar, including campuses home to thousands of students, is reprehensible and demonstrates Iran's disregard for civilian life. Our commitment to Qatar's defense is ironclad.

IRGCSUPPORTINGCLAIM

IRGC forces continue to operate against military targets across the region. Al Udeid is a direct participant in attacks against Iran. Qatar's hosting of this base makes it a legitimate military objective.

NATOOPPOSINGRESPONSE

The targeting of civilian areas including university campuses in Qatar is completely unacceptable. NATO calls on Iran to immediately halt attacks on civilian infrastructure and populated areas.
