Trump: 'nowhere near' deciding on troops to Iran to secure nuclear stockpile

·Doral, Florida, USA

Trump to NY Post: 'We haven't made any decision on that. We're nowhere near it.' Re: reported US-Israel discussions on possibly deploying special forces to Iran to seize and secure highly enriched uranium stockpile.

US President Donald Trump stated at his press conference that the US is 'nowhere near' deciding whether to send troops into Iran to secure the country's stockpile of highly enriched uranium. 'We haven't made any decision on that. We're nowhere near it,' Trump told reporters when asked about reported discussions between Israel and the United States on possibly deploying special forces to Iran to seize and secure the material. The question arose amid a longstanding dispute over Iran's nuclear program — the original casus belli for the February 28 US-Israeli strikes. Iran is believed to hold enough HEU for multiple nuclear weapons. If Iranian state control collapses, the question of who controls that material becomes critical. Israel has reportedly proposed a joint US-Israeli special forces operation to physically seize or destroy the stockpile. Trump's 'nowhere near' response is a denial of imminent action but not a ruling-out of future operations. The press conference comes after Trump told the NY Post this morning that he is 'not happy' with the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as supreme leader.
