Macron Visits Cyprus Tomorrow — Charles de Gaulle Carrier to Mediterranean, France Deploys Air Defence

·Cyprus / Paris / Mediterranean

French President Macron will visit Cyprus Monday to show EU solidarity after Iranian drone attacks. France has deployed Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier to the Mediterranean, a frigate, and air defence units to Cyprus. France insists posture is 'strictly defensive.' Macron spoke with Qatar Emir, Egypt, Azerbaijan presidents. France-Qatar: 'stability must come through de-escalation and negotiation.'

French President Emmanuel Macron announced he will visit Cyprus on Monday (Day 10) to demonstrate EU solidarity following Iranian drone attacks on the EU member state. The Elysée stated Macron will meet Cypriot President Christodoulides and Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis in Paphos to show solidarity and detail measures to strengthen security in the eastern Mediterranean. France has deployed the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier to the Mediterranean, a frigate, and air defence units to Cyprus. The Charles de Gaulle is France's only nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and its most significant power projection asset — its deployment to the Mediterranean represents a significant commitment of French military capability to the theatre. France has insisted its military posture is strictly defensive. The Elysée statement referenced freedom of navigation and maritime security in the Red Sea and Strait of Hormuz as topics Macron will raise — aligned with the EU's Aspides maritime operation. Macron had separately spoken with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and the presidents of Egypt and Azerbaijan. On Qatar: 'Qatar and France share the same conviction: beyond the clamor of arms, lasting stability for all must come through de-escalation and negotiation.' France is positioning as the EU's primary military actor in the eastern Mediterranean while simultaneously building a diplomatic coalition around de-escalation — distinct from the US-UK military posture.
