Macron orders nuclear carrier Charles de Gaulle to Mediterranean

·Mediterranean Sea

French President Emmanuel Macron has ordered the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and its strike group to deploy to the eastern Mediterranean. The deployment adds a third carrier presence to the region alongside the two US carrier strike groups. France confirms it will conduct 'defensive operations' from the carrier if required.

AP News reported that French President Macron has ordered the Porte-Avions Charles de Gaulle (R91), France's only nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, to deploy from Toulon to the eastern Mediterranean. The Charles de Gaulle carries approximately 40 aircraft including Rafale F3-R fighters — the same type already confirmed to have engaged Iranian drones over the UAE. The carrier is accompanied by its strike group including the destroyer Forbin (air defence), a nuclear attack submarine, and supply vessels. The deployment signals a major escalation in France's military commitment to the region. Macron addressed the French public: 'France will not allow the destabilisation of our partners in the region. The Charles de Gaulle will ensure we can protect French nationals, conduct defensive operations, and deter further Iranian aggression.' The carrier's presence in the Mediterranean creates a third carrier strike group in the region (alongside USS Gerald R. Ford and USS Harry S. Truman), giving the coalition an overwhelming naval air power advantage. The submarine component of the French CSG also brings nuclear deterrence signalling into the theatre for the first time. Russia's foreign ministry called the deployment 'extremely escalatory' and demanded France 'step back from the brink.'
