UK dispatches warship and helicopters to Cyprus for regional defensive operations

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Tuesday that the UK was dispatching a warship and helicopters to Cyprus to bolster British defensive operations in the region. The deployment supplements the UK's existing military engagement in the conflict — the day before, UK F-35B jets became the first British F-35s used in combat, shooting down Iranian drones over Jordan. A UK-Qatar joint squadron (12 Squadron) operating a Typhoon aircraft shot down an Iranian one-way attack drone over Qatar using an air-to-air missile. A British counter-drone unit also destroyed drones in Iraqi airspace targeting Coalition forces. The Cyprus deployment is significant as the island hosts the Akrotiri and Dhekelia Sovereign Base Areas — permanent UK military installations that are a key logistics hub for Middle East operations. Trump criticized Starmer over the slow pace of resolving basing issues for US forces, saying 'it's taken three, four days for us to work out where we can land' and that Starmer was 'not Winston Churchill.' The UK has not joined offensive operations against Iran but is actively defending regional partners.
