IRGC declares Strait of Hormuz closed — 200+ vessels anchored

·Strait of Hormuz

The IRGC formally declared the Strait of Hormuz closed to all traffic. Over 200 vessels, including oil tankers and LNG carriers, dropped anchor in surrounding waters. Maersk paused Trans-Suez sailings and rerouted via Cape of Good Hope. Three tankers were damaged in the Gulf — unclear if deliberate. 14 million barrels per day of oil flow disrupted.

At 12:00 UTC, the IRGC formally announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to all commercial and military traffic, executing a long-stated deterrence threat. The Strait, at its narrowest just 21 nautical miles wide between Iran and Oman, is the world's most critical energy chokepoint. More than 14 million barrels per day — approximately one-third of global seaborne crude exports — transit the Strait annually, along with significant volumes of LNG. Shipping reports confirmed over 200 vessels, including oil tankers, LNG carriers, and container ships, dropped anchor in the waters approaching the Strait. The IRGC deployed fast-attack craft and threatened to fire upon any vessel attempting transit. Reuters confirmed: "At least three tankers in the Gulf have been damaged since the U.S. and Israel began trading strikes with Iran. It is unclear whether the damage was done deliberately or accidentally." Maersk statement: "We have paused Trans-Suez sailings through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait for the moment. Some sailings will be rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope. All vessel crossings in the Strait of Hormuz are also suspended." Oil futures spiked approximately 35% in after-hours trading. Brent crude hit $143/barrel. US gasoline futures jumped significantly. Economists warned of a severe supply shock if the closure persists beyond 1–2 weeks. US 5th Fleet issued a statement it was "monitoring the situation" but declined to announce active efforts to reopen the Strait.

OFFICIAL WARNING: The Strait of Hormuz is CLOSED. Any vessel attempting to pass through Iranian-controlled waters will be set ablaze. This is not a drill. All commercial shipping is hereby banned. Iran has not yet deployed its most advanced weapons — what you have seen is a fraction of our capabilities. The enemy will pay a greater price.

PHAROS NOTEIRGC reaffirms Hormuz closure and advanced weapons warning. Combines two critical Iranian signals: Hormuz blockade and undisclosed weapons reserve. High importance for escalation assessment.

From Persian Gulf: 200+ vessels now at anchor outside the Strait of Hormuz. MarineTraffic live shows ZERO tanker transits in last 4 hours. IRGC fast-attack boats visible on AIS approaching Larak Island. One tanker captain I spoke with: "No one is moving. We are waiting. Nobody knows how long." Brent crude now +38% in after-hours. Gasoline futures limit-up. This is already the largest supply shock since the 1973 embargo.

PHAROS NOTE✅ On-the-ground AP reporting with primary source (captain). AIS data corroborates zero Hormuz transit. Oil price impact (+38%) is significant — if sustained >2 weeks, global recession risk elevated.

OIL MARKETS THREAD 🧵 Brent crude: +35.4% → $143.28/bbl (first close above $140 since 2008) WTI: +33.1% → $138.90 Henry Hub gas: +29% Gasoline futures: LIMIT UP Math: Hormuz = 20% of global oil, Bab el-Mandeb = another 10%. Both closed simultaneously for the first time in history. This is not 2022 Ukraine. Inventories are low, SPR was never fully replenished. If the Strait stays closed 3+ weeks: $180–$200/bbl territory. Recalibrate your assumptions.

PHAROS NOTE✅ Javier Blas is Bloomberg's lead energy correspondent. Price figures and supply math are accurate. The $180–200 scenario is realistic under 3+ week closure — economic damage would be severe globally.
IRNA (Islamic Republic News Agency)@@IRNA_EnglishBREAKING

URGENT: The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has formally declared the Strait of Hormuz closed to all commercial and military traffic effective immediately. "Any vessel attempting transit will be treated as a hostile actor supporting aggression against the Islamic Republic." — IRGC Navy Command Statement, February 28, 2026

PHAROS NOTE⚠️ IRNA is Iranian state media. However, Hormuz closure is independently confirmed by maritime tracking (Kpler, MarineTraffic) and Reuters. The closure itself is factual; IRGC enforcement capacity is the key uncertainty.
