Canada PM Carney labels IDF Lebanon deployment 'illegal invasion' violating Lebanon's sovereignty

·Wakefield, Quebec, Canada

Canadian PM Mark Carney condemned Israel's deployment of troops against Hezbollah in Lebanon as an 'illegal invasion' that violates Lebanon's 'integrity and sovereignty.' Carney noted Lebanon's government has itself banned Hezbollah and is trying to act against it — making Israel's invasion unjustified in Canada's view. Canada becomes the latest Western ally to formally condemn the Lebanon operation.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday denounced Israel's deployment of troops against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon as an 'illegal invasion' that violates Lebanon's 'integrity and sovereignty.' Speaking at an event in Wakefield, Quebec, Carney told journalists: 'The government of Lebanon has banned Hezbollah, is taking action, is trying to take action against Hezbollah and their terrorist activities and their threats to Israel, and that is the purported justification for this invasion.' Canada's condemnation comes as Israel's Defence Minister Katz on the same day outlined plans for the permanent occupation of south Lebanon to the Litani River and the destruction of Lebanese villages along Israel's northern border. Carney's 'illegal invasion' framing is significantly stronger than the language used by Italy (condemning UNIFIL attacks) or France (requesting UNSC meeting), and aligns with broader concerns over the 600,000+ Lebanese displaced by the IDF's D32 south Lebanon operations.
