The IDF announced on March 30 that Sergeant Liran Ben Zion, 19, from Holon, of the 401st Armored Brigade's 9th Battalion, was killed in action in southern Lebanon on March 29. According to an IDF investigation, one Hezbollah anti-tank guided missile struck a tank of the 9th Battalion, killing Ben Zion immediately and seriously injuring an officer aboard. Two additional anti-tank missiles were fired at the troops shortly after, causing no further casualties. IDF forces were operating in the area to locate the Hezbollah cell responsible for the deadly attack. Ben Zion is the sixth Israeli soldier killed since the IDF launched its renewed offensive against Hezbollah. The loss comes amid sustained Hezbollah fire on northern Israel, including rocket barrages on the Galilee and Haifa Bay area that contributed to the Bazan oil refinery fire on the same conflict day.
