An IDF officer and a soldier were severely wounded in an 'operational accident' during an encounter with Hezbollah operatives in southern Lebanon overnight on 27 March 2026, the IDF said. Both troops were taken to hospital in serious condition and their families were notified. An initial IDF investigation determined that a grenade mistakenly exploded near the two during the clash with Hezbollah. The incident adds to the growing toll of IDF casualties in southern Lebanon — including earlier deaths from Hezbollah ATGM strikes (Sgt. Aviaad Volansky, 21, from the 7th Armor Brigade), Ori Greenberg's death in a gunfight, and now an accidental grenade detonation. The IDF has five ground divisions operating in southern Lebanon plus the 98th Division preparing.
