Katz declares Israel will hold southern Lebanon security zone up to Litani until Hezbollah threat removed

·Southern Lebanon / Litani River

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz declared that Israel will control a security zone in southern Lebanon up to the Litani River until the Hezbollah threat is eliminated. He confirmed all Litani River bridges used by Hezbollah have been destroyed and that Lebanese residents displaced north will not return south of the Litani until northern Israel's security is ensured.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced at an assessment with IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir and senior officers that Israel will control a 'security zone' in southern Lebanon, extending to the Litani River, until the Hezbollah threat is removed. 'The IDF will continue to operate in Lebanon with full force against Hezbollah. Hundreds of thousands of residents of southern Lebanon who evacuated northward will not return south of the Litani River until security for the residents of the north is ensured,' Katz stated. He confirmed that all bridges over the Litani River 'have been blown up,' and that the IDF will control the remaining bridges and the full security zone up to the Litani. 'The principle is clear: Where there is terror and missiles, there will be no homes and no residents, and the IDF will be inside.' The Litani River lies approximately 30 km north of the current Israel-Lebanon border. Israel previously maintained a security zone in southern Lebanon until 2000, when it withdrew following an 18-year occupation. This declaration signals Israel's intent to re-establish that foothold indefinitely as long as Hezbollah retains offensive capability. The IDF also disclosed that troops operating on the Lebanese side of Mount Dov located a Hezbollah tunnel shaft and demolished structures used by the terror group in the area.
