IDF destroys 5 Litani River bridges — Lebanon's Aoun: 'dangerous escalation' and prelude to ground invasion
Israel destroyed five bridges over the Litani River in southern Lebanon, severing Hezbollah's supply routes and civilian movement south of the river. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the strikes as 'a dangerous escalation and a blatant violation of Lebanon's sovereignty,' calling them 'a prelude to a ground invasion.' Aoun said the targeting 'constitutes an attempt to sever the geographic connection between the area south of the Litani and the rest of Lebanese territory, and obstructs the delivery of humanitarian aid.' Beirut called on the UN Security Council to take immediate measures. Defence Minister Katz ordered all Litani bridges destroyed to cut Hezbollah resupply; the Qasmiya Bridge was the first confirmed strike, with four more following.
Actor responses
Katz: Netanyahu and I instructed the IDF to 'immediately destroy all the bridges over the Litani River used for terror activity.' Also ordered 'accelerate the destruction of Lebanese homes in the line of contact villages... in accordance with the model of Beit Hanoun and Rafah.'
No immediate Hezbollah response to the Litani bridge destruction order. Hezbollah has been using bridges north of the Litani to resupply forces in southern Lebanon throughout the conflict.
Lebanese President Aoun: bridge strikes are 'a dangerous escalation and a blatant violation of Lebanon's sovereignty. They are considered a prelude to a ground invasion — something Lebanon has repeatedly warned against.' The strikes 'sever the geographic connection between south of the Litani and the rest of Lebanese territory' and 'obstruct delivery of humanitarian aid.' Beirut calls on the UN Security Council to assume responsibilities and take immediate measures.
