Reuters/Ipsos poll: 65% expect US troops in Iran, only 7% support it — 59% disapprove of war
·United States (national poll)
A Reuters/Ipsos poll closed Thursday found 65% of Americans believe Trump will order a large-scale ground war in Iran but only 7% support the idea. Overall 37% approve of US strikes on Iran, 59% disapprove. 77% of Republicans support strikes vs 6% of Democrats. Trump's broader approval held at 40% — up 1 point from the war's outbreak.
A Reuters/Ipsos three-day poll (n=1,545 US adults, margin of error ~3 points) closing Thursday found:
- 65% of Americans believe Trump will order troops into a large-scale ground war in Iran
- Only 7% support a large-scale ground war
- 37% approve of US strikes on Iran; 59% disapprove
- 77% of Republicans approve of strikes; 6% of Democrats; 28% independents
- 63% of Republicans — but only 34% of Americans overall — would support deploying a small number of special forces troops
- 55% oppose any ground troop deployment
- Trump's overall approval: 40% (up 1 point from February 28 war start)
The poll reflects deep partisan divisions on the war. The near-universal Democratic opposition (94% against strikes) has not translated into electoral risk for Trump given strong Republican support. Separately, Reuters reported Wednesday that the Trump administration is mulling deploying thousands of troops for Hormuz escort or to Iran's Kharg Island (hub of 90% of Iran's oil exports).
