Drone attack strikes Ali Al Salem airbase in Kuwait — Italian UAV destroyed, no personnel casualties

·Ali Al Salem Air Base, Kuwait

A drone struck the Ali Al Salem airbase in Kuwait, which hosts Italian and US forces, destroying a shelter containing an Italian Task Force Air remotely piloted aircraft. Italy's chief of defence confirmed all personnel were safe. The attack marks a new front against NATO/coalition infrastructure in Kuwait, which has been hosting US and allied forces throughout the conflict.

Italy's chief of defence general staff, Luciano Portolano, confirmed that Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait was struck by a drone attack on the morning of March 16. 'This morning, Ali Al Salem base in Kuwait was the target of a drone attack that hit a shelter housing a remotely piloted aircraft of the Italian Task Force Air, which was destroyed,' Portolano said in a statement. All Italian personnel were confirmed safe. Ali Al Salem Air Base is a major US and allied forces installation in Kuwait that has been used to project air power throughout the US-Israeli campaign against Iran. The destruction of an Italian UAV represents a material loss of coalition ISR capability, even without personnel casualties. The Guardian March 16 live blog reported the attack at 08:00 CET (07:00 UTC). Iran and its proxies have been systematically targeting all Gulf airbases hosting coalition forces, including bases in UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and now Kuwait.
