UK defense secretary: Putin's 'hidden hand' behind Iran drone tactics — analyzing Akrotiri drone for Russian components

·London, UK / Akrotiri, Cyprus

UK Defense Secretary John Healey said Russian leader Vladimir Putin may be helping Iran with drone tactics and capabilities in its attacks on Western bases. The UK is analyzing the drone that struck the RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus for Russian components. Healey noted Putin benefits from high oil prices caused by the conflict, giving him revenue for the Ukraine war.

UK Defense Secretary John Healey said at a press conference that Russia is possibly helping Iran with drone tactics used in attacks on Western bases. 'At the moment, we're taking part in analyzing the drone that struck the hangar at Akrotiri [Cyprus] for any evidence of Russian or any other foreign components and parts,' Healey said. 'I think no one will be surprised to believe that Putin's hidden hand is behind some of the Iranian tactics, potentially some of their capabilities as well, not least because one world leader that is benefiting from the sky high oil prices at the moment is Putin. It helps him with a fresh supply of funds for his brutal war in Ukraine.' The Akrotiri drone analysis is ongoing. If Russian components are confirmed, it would represent a significant escalation in Russia-Iran military cooperation and implicate Moscow more directly in attacks on NATO infrastructure.
