Attack on Italian military base in Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan — no injuries

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed on Thursday March 12 that an Italian military base in Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan had been attacked. 'I strongly condemn the attack on the Italian base in Erbil,' Tajani said on X. 'I just spoke with the Italian ambassador to Iraq. Fortunately, all our soldiers are well and safe in the bunker.' Tajani did not give details on the type of attack. Italy maintains soldiers in Erbil to train Kurdistan security forces as part of an international coalition force. The attack follows a drone strike on a US diplomatic facility in Iraq earlier on Day 13 and represents the continued targeting of Western military and diplomatic facilities in Iraq by Iran-aligned militias. Erbil has been targeted by Iranian proxies in the past, and the attack on a European NATO ally's base broadens the conflict's impact on the Western coalition.
