Russia: consulate in Isfahan damaged by IDF strike on March 8 — 'blatant violation of diplomatic sites'

·Isfahan, Iran

Russian FM Zakharova: IDF strike on Isfahan governor's HQ on March 8 (Day 9) shattered windows + blast wave at adjacent Russian consulate. Several employees thrown by blast wave, no casualties. Zakharova: 'blatant violation of international conventions.' Putin called Pezeshkian Tuesday, called for halt to all hostilities.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova announced that Russia's consulate in the Iranian city of Isfahan was damaged on March 8 (Day 9) when an IDF airstrike hit the governor's administration of Isfahan province, located adjacent to the Russian consulate. 'Windows were shattered in the office building and residential apartments, and several employees were thrown by the blast wave. Fortunately, there were no casualties or serious injuries,' Zakharova said. She described the attack on a diplomatic representation as a 'blatant violation' of international conventions and called on all sides to observe the 'inviolability of diplomatic sites.' The timing of Russia's announcement — three days after the event — suggests Moscow deliberated on how to use the incident diplomatically. President Putin discussed the conflict with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday (Day 11), the Kremlin confirmed, with Putin calling for a halt to all hostilities. The Isfahan consulate damage now gives Russia a direct grievance against Israel in the conflict — elevating Moscow's diplomatic standing as an aggrieved party while positioning Putin as a mediator. Russia can now claim its diplomatic personnel were endangered by Israeli strikes, potentially justifying closer intelligence cooperation with Iran and a more active peace-brokering role. Israel has not commented on the consulate damage.
