'We are on the eve of a fateful campaign in Lebanon' — senior Israeli security official
·Israel / Lebanon
Senior Israeli security official to Ynet: 'Lebanon campaign going to expand significantly.' Reservist call-up coming. Israel warns Lebanese government through US + Western countries: rein in Hezbollah or national infrastructure gets hit. Official: 'This is heading toward a serious escalation.'
A senior Israeli security official told Ynet that Israel is 'on the eve of a fateful campaign in Lebanon which will determine the future of both countries.' 'There is a security discussion right now,' said the official. 'The campaign in Lebanon is going to expand significantly.' The expanded campaign will include the call-up of more reservists. The official explained Hezbollah's strategic calculus: 'Hezbollah, in its calculations, wants to turn our attention away from Iran, and thinks that if it draws us in, we will take our foot off the gas in the campaign against Iran. Hezbollah wants to create a new balance in which Israel's enforcement policy in Lebanon ends, and we don't attack at all. That won't happen. Therefore, this is heading toward a serious escalation.' The official said Israel has 'more capabilities and tools, and we can conduct campaigns in parallel against Iran and against Lebanon.' Channel 12 separately reported that Israel has sent a warning to Lebanon's government through the US and Western countries that if Beirut does not rein in Hezbollah, Israel will attack national infrastructure — including power grids, ports, and economic facilities. The threat to strike Lebanese national infrastructure represents a significant escalation in Israeli targeting doctrine — moving from targeting Hezbollah directly to threatening the Lebanese state apparatus for failing to constrain its armed group.
