EU approves sanctions on 19 Iranian officials and entities for human rights violations

·Brussels, Belgium / Iran

EU envoys approve new sanctions on 19 Iranian officials and entities for serious human rights violations. EU foreign policy chief Kallas: 'The EU will protect its interests and pursue those responsible for domestic repression.' Requires final Council of EU approval.

European Union envoys approved new sanctions targeting 19 Iranian officials and entities responsible for serious human rights violations. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced the sanctions, writing: 'As the Iran war continues, the EU will protect its interests and pursue those responsible for domestic repression. It also sends a message to Tehran that Iran's future cannot be built on repression.' The sanctions had been in preparation before the war began and will require final formal approval from the Council of the EU. The EU sanctions are distinct from and additive to the military and economic pressure being applied by the US-Israel campaign. By targeting individuals responsible for domestic repression — regime security officials, judiciary figures — the EU is signaling support for the Iranian people against the regime while stopping short of direct military involvement. The 19 officials/entities targeted are in addition to existing EU Iran sanctions regimes.
