US Patriot air defense deployed to Turkey's Malatya — NATO bolstering ally amid Iranian missile threat

Turkey's Defense Ministry confirms US Patriot system deployed to Malatya in southeastern Turkey. Location of Kurecik NATO radar base that identified two Iranian ballistic missiles heading toward Turkey. NATO coordinating broader alliance air defense upgrades.

Turkey's Defense Ministry confirmed that one US Patriot air defense system has been deployed to the southeastern Malatya province as part of NATO measures to boost Turkey's air defenses amid the Iranian missile threat. The Kurecik NATO radar base in Malatya is a critical installation that provides early warning data to the alliance and helped identify the two Iranian ballistic missiles that passed through Turkish airspace during the war. The Patriot deployment serves dual purposes: protecting the Kurecik radar base itself (which Iran may consider targeting to degrade NATO's missile tracking capability) and bolstering Turkey's overall air defense posture as Iranian missiles increasingly pass through or near Turkish airspace. Turkey's defense ministry said it 'will continue to cooperate and evaluate regional developments with NATO allies.' The Patriot deployment follows the UK shooting down Iranian drones over Jordan and near Bahrain, and France positioning the CDG carrier group in the eastern Mediterranean — reflecting a progressive NATO military engagement in the conflict that goes beyond passive diplomatic support.
