Damascus accuses Hezbollah of shelling Syrian army positions — Lebanon-Syria border incident threatens new front

·Serghaya, Lebanon-Syria border

Syria's SANA: Hezbollah shells Syrian army positions near Serghaya border town. Syria 'studying appropriate options.' Lebanese President Aoun calls al-Sharaa to coordinate borders. Hezbollah denies: 'no intent of opening a second front while engaged with Israelis.' If confirmed, Hezbollah is firing at Arab armies — major escalation.

Syria's state-run news agency SANA reported that the Syrian military accused Hezbollah of launching artillery shells toward Syrian army positions near the border town of Serghaya. The Syrian military said in a statement that 'appropriate options are being studied to do what is necessary' and that 'the army will not tolerate any aggression targeting Syria.' Lebanese President Joseph Aoun subsequently called Syrian interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa to agree that the two countries need to coordinate 'to control the borders and prevent any security breaches.' Hezbollah has claimed to be clashing with Israeli troops in Serghaya, which the IDF denied. Hezbollah also denied the Syrian military's account, saying: 'We have no intent of opening a [second] front while we are engaged with the Israelis.' The incident is potentially explosive: if Hezbollah is firing on Syrian army positions near the Lebanese-Syrian border, it risks opening a third front — Hezbollah vs. the new Syrian government that has already backed Lebanon's disarmament of Hezbollah. Al-Sharaa's Damascus has broken from the Iran-Hezbollah axis. Syrian fire on Hezbollah positions in retaliation would put Hezbollah in a genuinely multi-front situation — Israel to the south, Syria to the east, and IDF air power above.
