Synagogue Bombed in Liège, Belgium — No Injuries, Windows Shattered Across Street

·Liège, Belgium

Blast at 4am in front of the historic Liège synagogue (built 1899). Windows blown out across the road. No injuries. Federal police investigating. First confirmed attack on a Jewish institution in Europe in the current war — spillover of regional conflict into European targets.

A blast occurred at approximately 4am local time in front of the historic synagogue in Liège, eastern Belgium. The explosion damaged the synagogue — built in 1899, which also serves as a museum for the history of Liège's Jewish community — and blew out windows of surrounding buildings across the road. No injuries were reported. Police erected a security perimeter and the federal police were expected at the scene. The cause of the explosion was under investigation. The Liège synagogue blast is the first confirmed attack on a Jewish institution in Europe during the current Iran war — a clear indicator of conflict spillover into European targets. Europe has experienced elevated antisemitic incidents throughout the war, following the pattern seen during previous Israel-related conflicts (2014 Gaza war, October 7 2023 aftermath). A blast at the synagogue itself rather than spray-painted graffiti or verbal harassment represents a significant escalation in the nature of European spillover violence.

Actor responses

NATOOPPOSINGOFFICIAL_STATEMENT

Belgian PM De Wever: antisemitism is an attack on our values. We stand in solidarity with the Jewish community in Liège. The war in the Middle East must not spread to European streets.
