Witkoff and Kushner Coming to Israel Tuesday — US Irked by Scope of Israeli Oil Depot Strikes

·Washington D.C. / Tel Aviv

US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner plan to arrive in Israel Tuesday as US-Israel tensions emerge over oil infrastructure strikes. Senior US official: 'We don't think it was a good idea.' Israel struck far more oil infrastructure than Washington expected. US fears civilian fuel disruption will turn public opinion against the campaign. First confirmed US-Israel strategic rift of the war.

US President Trump's envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are planning to arrive in Israel on Tuesday for talks, as disagreements have emerged between Washington and Jerusalem over Israeli strikes on Iranian oil facilities on Day 8. A senior American security official told Channel 12 that Israel had informed Washington in advance about plans to target oil infrastructure, but did not indicate the strikes would be as extensive as they turned out to be. 'We don't think it was a good idea,' the official said. US officials were concerned that striking infrastructure that also supplies civilian fuel to Tehran's population could backfire — strengthening the Iranian regime by generating public sympathy and turning opinion against the US-Israeli campaign. The Israeli rationale, according to an Israeli security official cited by Channel 12, was that the oil depot strikes were intended in part to send a message to Tehran to stop targeting civilian sites in Israel — a tit-for-tat rationale. The disagreement has so far taken place primarily at the military level, without a clear political message being conveyed between the two governments. The planned Witkoff-Kushner visit will be the highest-level US diplomatic engagement with Israel since the war began. US Energy Secretary Wright had separately confirmed earlier on Day 9 that the US is targeting zero Iranian energy infrastructure — a policy that Israel appears to have operationally diverged from.
