UK Places HMS Prince of Wales on Advanced Preparedness for Middle East Deployment

·UK / Eastern Mediterranean

UK Ministry of Defence announces HMS Prince of Wales, one of Britain's two flagship aircraft carriers, has been placed on advanced preparedness ahead of possible deployment to the Middle East. UK has already deployed Typhoons, F-35s, air defence systems, and 400 additional personnel to Cyprus. British jets shooting down Iranian drones.

The UK Ministry of Defence announced on Day 8 that HMS Prince of Wales — one of Britain's two Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers — has been placed on advanced preparedness for potential deployment to the Middle East. A MoD spokesperson said: We have been bolstering our UK military presence in the Middle East since January, and we have already deployed capabilities to protect British people and our allies in the region, including Typhoons, F-35 jets, air defence systems and an extra 400 personnel into Cyprus. Since the strikes began, we've had British jets in the sky shooting down drones and have sent additional assets to the region to further reinforce our air defences, including more Typhoons and Wildcat helicopters with drone-busting missiles. HMS Prince of Wales has always been on very high readiness and we are increasing the preparedness of the carrier, reducing the time it would take to set sail for any deployment. HMS Prince of Wales is a 65,000-tonne carrier capable of operating F-35B Lightning jets. Placing it on advanced preparedness — described by MoD as reducing the time it would take to set sail — is a significant escalatory signal. The UK has been operating in a supporting role since the conflict began: shooting down Iranian drones, deploying additional air defence assets to Cyprus, and pre-positioning Typhoons and F-35s. Bringing a carrier to advanced readiness extends the potential UK contribution from defensive to offensive capable. The decision will require parliamentary scrutiny given Lammy's earlier statement that offensive action requires a Commons vote.
