UN High Commissioner Turk Calls for Ceasefire; Lebanon Displacement May Violate International Law

·Geneva / Beirut

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk calls for immediate cessation of hostilities. Raises serious concerns about Israel's blanket displacement orders for Beirut's southern suburbs and compliance with international humanitarian law.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk told reporters in Geneva that Lebanon is becoming a key flashpoint and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities. Turk expressed particular concern about Israel's blanket, massive displacement orders for Beirut's southern suburbs, describing them as impacting hundreds of thousands of people and raising serious concern under international humanitarian law, specifically around forced transfer. The Lebanese health ministry has confirmed 217 killed and 798 wounded since Monday. Turk's statement follows a UNHCR report that nearly 100,000 people have been displaced within Lebanon and tens of thousands of Syrian refugees have fled back across the border. The UN characterised the situation as a major humanitarian emergency. The displacement concerns add to international legal scrutiny of the campaign alongside the Reuters investigation into the likely US strike on an Iranian girls school on Day 1.
