Trump threatens to cut all US trade with Spain after Madrid refuses US military base access for Iran strikes

President Trump announced that the United States would cut off all trade with Spain after the European country refused to let the US military use its bases for missions linked to strikes on Iran. 'Spain has been terrible,' Trump told reporters, adding that he had told Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to 'cut off all dealings' with Spain. 'We're going to cut off all trade with Spain. We don't want anything to do with Spain.' The Spanish government responded defiantly: 'If the US administration wishes to review it, it must do so while respecting the autonomy of private companies, international law, and the bilateral agreements between the European Union and the United States.' The Spanish government added it would 'always work for free trade and economic cooperation among countries, based on mutual respect and compliance with international law.' The threat marks a significant transatlantic fracture, with a NATO ally facing punitive economic measures from Washington over its refusal to support the Iran operation. Spain is the second major European ally after the UK to face US pressure over the Iran war.
